What does the Council do?

Tendring District Council is a local authority that provides public services to people in the Tendring District area which includes Clacton on Sea, Harwich, Brightlingsea, Walton on the Naze and Manningtree.

The District and Borough Councils are part of the government structure, which is explained below:

Central Government

At the top of this structure is the central government which looks after national affairs, such as health, defence, foreign policy and the environment.

The government is responsible for the general welfare of citizens and gives protection to the most vulnerable in society.

Shire County Government

The next level down is the County Council. For people living in the Tendring District it is Essex County Council. This Council covers 12 districts and boroughs like Tendring.

Essex County Council is responsible for education, the youth service, child care, promoting the economic well-being of the County, care for elderly and vulnerable people, promoting opportunities in heritage, arts and sport, libraries, highways and transportation, campaigning for an attractive and cleaner environment, waste disposal and recycling, trading standards and emergency planning.

Tendring District Council

The District or Borough Council is the next level down. Tendring District Council is responsible for planning decisions, benefits, collecting the Council Tax, recycling and waste collection, housing, leisure facilities, regeneration and much more.

The Council has 10 departments or services, which are:

 Corporate Performance Service

 Environmental Services

 Financial Services

 Housing Services

 Human Resources and Customer Services

 Legal Services

 Leisure Services

 Regeneration, Planning and Community Service

 Technical and Procurement Services

 Parish Councils

Districts are split in to smaller areas and these are called parishes. Most of these parishes have a parish council or town council.  Where there is a parish council it deals with such matters as footpaths, village greens, parish and community property and provision of seats and shelters.
