Environmental Services

Environmental Services is made up of four sections:

Food, Health and Safety - inspect businesses to see if food safety and general health and safety rules are being followed. This can include restaurants and food manufacturers as well as pet shops, animal boarding and breeding establishments and zoos to see if the animals are being looked after and tattooists and body piercing shops to check that they are clean and healthy.

Pollution and Environment - This team investigates complaints from the public about commercial, industrial and domestic pollution problems and public health nuisances arising from noise, smoke, odours, verminous premises etc.  

Residential Health - They check to see if houses are unfit to live in; tenant's complaints regarding lack of amenities, overcrowding, harassment and illegal eviction. They also work with Essex County Council over unauthorised gypsy camps and gypsy issues.

Waste Management - This includes refuse collection; street sweeping; beach cleaning; recycling, re-use initiatives and education; Dog Warden Services including the seizure of stray dogs, good dog ownership campaigns and public education; Pest Control Services including the treatment of houses for rats and mice; the repair and maintenance and cleaning of public toilets and the removal of abandoned vehicles.
